what is amateur radio?

Amateur radio (ham radio) is the use of radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radio sport, contesting, and emergency communication.  It is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics, and communication together.  People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the internet or cell phones … You can set up a ham radio station anywhere!  When cell phones, regular phones, the internet and other systems are down or overloaded, Amateur Radio still gets the message through.  It is also a service – a vital service that has saved lives when regular communication systems fail.
